Hoover Institution:George P. Shultz: How to Get America Moving Again

Source:The New Democrat

George Shultz now a fellow at the Hoover Institution and of course former Secretary of State for President Reagan and I believe Secretary of Treasury or Commerce for President Nixon wrote an interesting article on how to get America moving again. I would call it a classically conservative Republican plan that moves away from the Tea Party of today and the libertarian-right of today. I don’t agree with most of it. The only part I like was the part about lowering corporate taxes as long as you eliminate taxpayer-funded subsidies. To get American business’s more competitive with the rest of the world.

Lets take tax reform because Secretary Shultz mentioned it. Eliminate most if not all tax loopholes to lower rates across the board. Sounds like a good idea to me and if it was a choice between that and the regressive flat tax I would take the Shultz plan. But how about instead of taxing what people produce in America with their income, we tax what people take out of the country. I prefer a Progressive Consumption Tax that would tax people’s basic necessities like food, water, housing, health care to use as examples at fairly low tax rates. And tax luxury items like second homes, expensive meals, ball games, luxury cars to use as examples at higher rates. Encourage people to make money and be productive and smart with their money.

As far as health care, I like the idea of health savings accounts even for low-income Americans that come with government assistance for them. I also like the idea of letting people on Medicaid opt out of Medicaid and choose a private health insurance plan, or open a health savings account. Because again it encourages people to take responsibility over their own lives, instead of government taking responsibility for them. Which makes things more cost-effective for everyone involved and encourages people to be smart consumers with their own lives.

Now how about some things that Secretary Shultz didn’t mention. We need to literally rebuild this country and our national infrastructure system which would literally benefit every American especially low-income Americans who live in underdeveloped societies. And would open the way for companies to move into those communities and invest in them. But also would give access to companies to actually be able to get their products to those communities because the roads and other infrastructure would be there for that to happen. And as a result we would see new stores and business’s opening up in these communities including local business’s.

How about reforming public education in America with the Elementary and Secondary Education Act for anyone interested in combating poverty in this country.

Instead of financing schools based on where they are located, finance based on what they need to be successful.  The Federal Government can help with extra funding for low-income communities for public schools.

Instead of sending kids to school based on where they live, let their parents send them to best public school that is best for them. That is called Public School Choice.

Instead of paying teachers based on how long they’ve taught, pay them based on how well their kids are learning. That is called Merit Pay. Encourage highly qualified highly trained people to not only go into public education, but make it worth to them financially and encourage them to especially educate in low-income communities in low-performing schools.

As far as low-income, low-skilled adults. Not just encourage them to finish their education so they can get themselves a good job, but make it a requirement for them to receive any form of public assistance. So public assistance literally becomes a way for people to move up in life. Not live in poverty with a few extra bucks. And the Feds can help out with financial assistance for education and for childcare so people with kids have someone to watch them while their parents are in school.

As far as energy policy. We need a National Energy Independence Policy that gets us off of foreign oil and gas and onto to American oil, gas and other of our own natural resources. You do that by encouraging American companies to develop, research and produce those resources in this country. That is called an All Above Energy Strategy where we produce all of America’s energy sources in this country. Oil, gas, nuclear, solar, wind, water everything that we produce and produce it here. And be able to export them instead of importing other countries energy.

I love the ideas of cutting high taxes and pointless regulations and red tape. But that alone doesn’t return America to prosperity as much as the Tea Party may claim it does. I also love the idea of deficit and debt reduction, but that is not possible without a strong economy. The economy needs to be first and rebuild that and then everything else opens up and becomes possible. And we are doing these things we also shouldn’t be doing anything to add to the deficit and debt and that even includes emergency spending. Which means government needs to pay as we go from now on at least until we are back to economic and fiscal health.

ABC News: Special Report: Iranian Hostage Crisis (12/03/1979)

Source:The New Democrat

The Shah of Iran was a major reason for why the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis came about in the first place. Because the Shah was a dictator and at times a brutal dictator even though he was moderate in other areas like in economic and foreign policy. But he used his vast powers to keep the opposition that was democratic and theocratic down with his Secret Police and arresting people without charges. And holding them indefinitely without trial. And as a result the Islamists in Iran woke up and fought back and took over the country.

The Fiscal Times: John Grgurich: U.S. Economy Grows More Under Democratic Presidents: Is That Good Luck or Good Policy?

Source:The New Democrat

I know this is going to sound like a copout and trying not to take a hard stand and everything else, but the answer to why the American economy does better under Democratic presidents than Republican presidents to put it simply, is both. Democratic presidents tend to have better economic policies which I’ll get to later than Republicans. And when a Democrat is President many times they become President just right before the economy is about to take off. Jack Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Bill Clinton are perfect examples of that. Harry Truman would be another one and Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter are unfortunately the exceptions to that.

As far as policies Democratic presidents both liberal and progressive tend to want an economy that works for everyone. Sure Republican presidents I’m sure believe in the same thing. But Democrats put in the policies that make that economy come about. Which is why they focus so much on education, infrastructure, job training for low-income workers and unemployed workers whether they are educated or not, encouraging companies to invest in low-income areas.

Republicans tend to believe in what George H.W. Bush called when he ran for president in 1980 ‘Voodoo Economics’, that some others call Trickle Down Economics. “You cut regulations and taxes for employers and individuals and the economic activity that will come from those business’s and individuals that now have that extra money will now be invested in other business’s and that economic activity will benefit everyone as a whole”. That is the theory anyway, but the results have been at best mixed for thirty-five years or so ever since the policy was introduced in Congress by then Representative Jack Kemp and Senator Bill Roth.

As far as the lets say good luck, yes Democratic presidents have inherited economies that were just about to take off. Bill Clinton comes to mind in 1993 with the Cold War just ending and with the start of the Information Technology Revolution just getting under way around 1990-91 with all of the cell phones and laptop computers now online and of course the internet just getting under way. The Clinton White House had their own web site under way from the start and had email as well.

So yes Democratic presidents happen to of become President when the economy is just about to boom. But they’ve also have pushed policies that empowers all workers to be able to take advantage of economic booms. Economic booms do nothing for people without the skills to take advantage of them. Which is why education is always so critical for any economy to do well. And Democrats tend to push those polices more than Republicans.

The Atlantic: Russell Berman: Bernie Sanders is 2016’s Democratic Noisemaker

Source:The New Democrat

The far-left, or socialist-left, McGovernites if you will in the Democratic Party and outside of the Democratic Party need credibility if they are ever going to be taken seriously by anyone in America with real power let alone have any real power of their own. Elizabeth Warren even though she seems to have a lot of support from this community is not that person because she is not a radical as her supporters believe and hope she is. She is a FDR New Deal or LBJ Great Society Progressive Democrat. A mainstream Progressive and not a Green Party Socialist or any other type of Socialist.

Bernie Sanders would be that candidate and leader for the broader far-left socialist movement in this country. Because he not only has their respect, support and backs, but he’s one of them. I mean the only self-described Socialist in the U.S. Congress in either the Senate or House which should be a pretty good clue there. But he’s taken seriously by the broader Democratic Party and  left-wing in America because of his honest and credibility (and sanity). And that he uses real facts and not just talking points to make his arguments.

Patrick J. Buchanan: President Richard Nixon Before Watergate

Source:The New Democrat

Pat Buchanan who is definitely a true loyalist to Richard Nixon, but who does make some good points about President Nixon pre-Watergate and what the man and his administration had accomplished. But that just makes Watergate and the Nixon White House’s involvement including the President himself that more tragic and just backs that up even more. You have the great side of Richard Nixon as far as the visionary thinker and his intelligence that allowed for him to accomplish everything he did as President. But then you have the destructive side of the man that somewhat at least overshadows what he accomplished as President of the United States.

ABC News: Special Report: Iranian Hostage Crisis (11/11/1979)

Source:The New Democrat

The 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis was the final nail in the coffin of a very horrible year for America and President Jimmy Carter. With all the bad economic news with the high cost of living due to the energy crisis, high interest rates and inflation, high unemployment. And an administration led by President Jimmy Carter not seeming to be able to adequately respond to any of these issues in an effective way and President Carter’s approval rating taking a beating as a result.

PBS NewsHour: Judy Woodruff Hosts a Panel Discussion About Richard Nixon: Why Are We Still Fascinated by Richard Nixon?

Source:The New Democrat

Is there a more fascinating politician than Richard Nixon, that is why we are still fascinated about this man. Because there is so much to him from both good and bad. And forty years later we are still trying to learn more about the man. Every book that is written about him, or every movie that comes out about the man, or any new research and information that comes out about the man is seen by a lot of people and discussed everywhere. And not just in America, but around the world. Because of how consequential he was when it came to both American foreign and domestic policy and of course of the criminal operation inside of the White House and Watergate that along with the Nixon tapes brought down President Richard Nixon.

Moyers & Company: Video: Bill Moyers Interviewing Ta-Nehisi Coates: Facing the Truth: The Case for Reparations

The New Democrat

One of the problems and not the only problem, but one of the main problems with reparations for African-Americans, or any other group of Americans is that we would be requiring not asking, but requiring Americans of all races to pay for the evils and horrors that English-Americans for the most part did to African-Americans. Requiring Americans of all races including African-Americans and even successful middle-class and wealthy African-Americans to pay for the evils of English-Americans and what they did to African-Americans for what three-hundred years now.

Los Angeles Times: Doyle McManus: What’s the Secret to Richard Nixon’s Unpopularity?

Source:The New Democrat

If all due respect to Doyle McManus who is a very knowledgable Washington political insider and very intelligent about Washington politics. There is no secret to why Richard Nixon is unpopular. “Go to the videotape” as the old sports broadcast saying goes. Or in President Nixon’s case go to his tape recordings. You hear the countless remarks having to do with the Watergate coverup and his criminal activities inside of the White House. His ethnic cracks and smears about Italians, Jews, the Irish. The Irish slurs are kind of funny to me since Dick Nixon was an Irishman himself. But his cracks about Latinos as well.

Putting all of that aside however (even if it takes you years to put all of that aside) President Nixon looks better to me forty years later because of what he accomplished as President. And I would take him over President George W. Bush who as far as we know never committed any crimes as President (at least in America) because of what Dick Nixon accomplished as President. In foreign affairs, environmental policy and what he tried to do for the country, but came up short as it related to Welfare reform, health care reform, creating a national energy policy, his federalism program.

CBS News: Evening News: A Look Back at President Richard Nixon’s Resignation

Source:The New Democrat

I would feel sorry for Richard Nixon and his last few days and even weeks as President had he not of brought these things down by his own actions. With the plumbers unit and the illegal break ins, his role in covering up Watergate, the taping system and without all of that President Nixon doesn’t resign. Of course there were people on the Left who hated the man, but if it wasn’t for President Nixon’s own personal actions as President, he never gets impeached.
