Pot TV: Video: Sun News: Full Interview: Marc Emery Talks to Marissa Semkiw SUN NEWS

Marc Emery arguing that he’s supporting Justin Trudeau the Leader of the Liberal Party in Canada because of marijuana and he believes the Federal Liberals in Canada are the best avenue to getting marijuana legalized in Canada. Leader Trudeau to me at least from what I’ve heard and read about him sounds like a centrist or a mushy middle moderate. So for someone like that to take a strong stance on marijuana legalization as in favor of it would be a big step for someone of that type of political background.

Firing Line With William F. Buckley: George C. Wallace: The Wallace Crusade (1968)

“WFB had sharply criticized Mr. Wallace in print, both for his once-adamant attachment to segregation and for his New Deal statism, and Mr. Wallace came on Firing Line determined not to give an inch. GW: “Name one thing in Alabama that I have supported on the governmental level that you are against.” WFB: “You want the state to take care of hospitalization, you want the state to take care of old people, you want the state to take care of the poor.” GW: “Are you against caring for the poor and the old? … I might say that no conservative in this country who comes out against looking after destitute elderly people ought to be elected to anything.” WFB: “You call yourself a populist, right?” GW: “If you mean by a populist a man of the people, yes, I’m a populist. Let’s get back to the old-age pension. Let’s see, you’re against Alabama’s looking after the elderly destitute citizens of the state?” (The following month, Mr. Wallace would declare his third-party candidacy for President.)”

“Episode 088, Recorded on January 24, 1968

Guest: George C. (George Corley) Wallace”

From Firing Line With William F. Buckley

William F. Buckley during this interview was trying to label Governor George Wallace as a Progressive Democrat in this interview, at least on economic policy. And you don’t see Governor Wallace denying his progressive economic positions. He even says in this interview: “If being a Conservative means not looking after senior citizens in their old age, then I’m not a Conservative.” That’s a paraphrase, but it’s very close.

George Wallace wasn’t a Conservative. He was a Progressive Federalist (no, that’s not an Oxymoron) who wanted the Federal Government out of state domestic affairs, even as it related to the civil rights issues and believed that the states had the constitutional right to segregate people by race. And you see Mr. Buckley critiquing Governor Wallace for being both a Progressive Democrat and a Neo-Confederate during this show.

Watch Mojo: Top 10 Walter Cronkite Moments: JFK, Vietnam, Watergate

The New Democrat

Walter Cronkite was and still is the standard for broadcast news because of his knowledge of the news and what it meant, but also how he carried himself. He was always the man in charge at his CBS News desk, the man you turn to when there is some type of crisis. The man you know won’t fold under pressure and always know what to do whatever the situation is. Sort of like a great general in battle or a great head coach in sports who is not replaceable and still missed today.

The Atlantic: Connor Friedersdorf: Libertarians Can Be a Significant Force For Good in U.S. Politics

Source:The New Democrat

I covered this about six months ago or so on why today’s Progressive lets say do not like Libertarians. Why because they are the most serious threat to what today’s Progressives want to accomplish in America. Which is the creation of a Scandinavian superstate. Which is a massive welfare state that would handle most of the economic decisions for most if not all Americans. They want to end the means-tested safety net and move to a welfare state that would be responsible for taking care of everyone. Our retirement, health care, health insurance, education and even more services.

That is why today’s Progressives who are really Social Democrats or Eurocrats are always arguing in favor of new revenue meaning new taxes and higher taxes and not just on the wealthy, but across the board. Because they know these new social services are going to have to be paid for. They know that much about economics. And who does the most effective case arguing against the safety net and welfare state? Libertarians and people are now listening to them. And some Libertarians like Senator Rand Paul have even moderated their position and arguing in favor of letting the states run these programs. Instead of saying we should eliminate them and that argument gains traction as well especially with young people.

This is why the Jonathan Chaite’s of the world and other modern Progressives argue that Libertarians aren’t real, or they have no real movement, or no real influence. If any of that were true these writers wouldn’t be arguing so forcefully that Libertarians doesn’t exist and have no real power. Because they are worried about them and their growing influence and that Americans don’t want a welfare state running their economic lives and a nanny state running their personal lives. That they want to make these decisions for themselves. As today’s Progressives are arguing for both the welfare and nanny states.

President Gerald Ford: Pardons Richard Nixon (September 8, 1974)

Source:The New Democrat

As unpopular as the pardoning of Richard Nixon was for President Gerald Ford in 1974 and contributed to President Ford losing the election in 1976, it was the right thing for the President to do. Because of all the problems that he inherited as President dealing with the economy with high inflation, high interest rates, the recession of 1974-75, a rising deficit, the ending of the Vietnam War with the Ford Administration having to bring American personal back home from Vietnam safely. President Ford had a lot on his plate already and didn’t have time to deal with the Nixon case and prosecution.

ABC News Special Report: American Hostages Day 444

Source:The New Democrat

The final insult from Iran to President Jimmy Carter was Iran not officially releasing the American hostages in Iran until the second or minute that Jimmy Carter was no longer President of the United States. And then the hostages were allowed to leave Iran for Algeria and then to Germany and then of course back to America. The Iranians kept these innocent American hostages who were only guilty of working at the American embassy in Iran longer than they had to just so Jimmy Carter who and his administration did all the work to get the Americans free and deserve all of the credit, but so they weren’t officially released under their watch.

Firing Line With William F. Buckley: Leander Perez- ‘The Wallace Crusade (1968)’

“Episode 095, Recorded on April 15, 1968

Guest: Leander Perez.”

From Firing Line With William F. Buckley

I never heard of Leander Perez from Louisiana before I saw this video. But apparently he was both Governor of Louisiana and a judge in Louisiana and this interview was done in 1968. And they were talking segregation and the civil rights laws. And the Governor telling Bill Buckley that he’s not a racist even though he says Negros (which is what African-Americans back then were called) are morally inferior to Caucasian-Americans. And Perez saying that he’s being honest and that is the truth: “why hide it”? With Buckley replying: “so you are an honest bigot”.

This video is called The Wallace Movement, but very little if any mention at least in this short video of Governor George Wallace of Alabama. Who was a Dixiecrat, a right-wing (at least on social cultural issues) Nationalist who was basically still fighting the Civil War and wanting to lead Confederates in that war. Not ready to perhaps even see African-Americans as people, let alone as Americans deserving of the same rights and protections, as well as responsibilities as European-Americans. Bill Buckley was a Conservative. And one of the conservative values is treating individuals as exactly that. And not treating people as members of groups. Worst or better simply because of their race.

The so-called Wallace Movement of the South of the 1960s and 1970s, was different. And more of a racially based nationalistic movement of Southern Caucasians, predominantly Protestant and perhaps even Anglo-Saxon. Who felt having African-Americans in their community was some type of an invasion. When the fact was and still is that Africans are just as American as Europeans and as such deserving of the same rights as European-Americans and every other race in America. The Wallace Movement simply saw African-Americans as inferior. And not deserving of the same rights and protections.

Bedford TV: Video: CBS News Evening News: Iranian Hostage Crisis, December 26, 1980

This post was originally posted at The New Democrat on Blogger

Looks like at least from this short film that the American hostages in Iran were taken care of. That they weren’t being starved, or forced to wear awful looking prison uniforms and held under brutal conditions. That they were being held like white-collar inmates would be held in America in a minimum security prison. Just based on this little film the hostages looked like they were in good shape and given the opportunity to tell their families that.

The Daily Caller: Opinion: Molly Gill: Before Creating Any More New Crimes, Congress Should Reform the Penalties it Made Decades Ago

U.S. Senator Rand Paul Speaking Out Against Over Criminalization

The Daily Caller: Opinion: Molly Gill: Before Creating Any New Crimes, Congress Should Reform Penalties it Made Decades Ago

This post was originally posted at The New Democrat on Blogger

Over criminalization are the perfect two words put together to describe why America has so many people in either jail or prison. We have so many victimless crimes like anti-gambling laws, anti-prostitution laws, the War on Drugs should be first on the list. But how about some states in the union who have anti-homosexual laws and if New York City ever had its way people could be arrested for what they eat and drink as well. What is so progressive about that? I fail to see any progress there.

You eliminate victimless crime laws and you would dramatically reduce our prison population. You reform laws where there are real victims involved where a penalty needs to be imposed for the good of society like shoplifting to use as an example and people who sell or possess small amounts of illegal narcotics and you also dramatically reduce your prison population. No crime would not go up because now most of these activities and again talking about victimless crimes would now be legal.

Representative Bob Goodlatte who is Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee put together a House task force dealing with the over criminalization in America and to look at why we have so many people in  prison early in this Congress. Which is a good first step even though Representative Goodlatte also is in favor of a constitutional amendment to outlaw pornography which would just add to the problem over criminalization. But there is bipartisan support to reduce our prison population and reform some of our laws. So this is not some far-lefty or anarchist conspiracy on why we have so many people in prison.

Richard Nixon Foundation: Video: Nixon Tapes: A Nutcase Congressmen With House Minority Leader Gerald Ford

This post was originally posted at The New Democrat on Blogger

President Richard Nixon and House Minority Leader Gerald Ford talking about House Majority Leader Hale Boggs in 1971 or 72. Leader Boggs was a bit out there and Boobs would probably be a good nickname for him because he was known on both sides of the isle as doing strange things. That probably came from drinking too much. And Dick Nixon being the great judge character and sanity himself as someone who had a real deficits as they related to both character and sanity could see that Hale Boggs was also a bit out there.
