National Journal: Matt Berman: The Forgotten, Radical Martin Luther King Jr.

Source:The New Democrat

The radicalism of Dr. Martin Luther King had to do with his economic politics and philosophy. He would be what would be described as a Social Democrat both as it related to civil and equal rights. But when it came economic policy and having a big central government there to reduce poverty and what is called income inequality and that type of economic philosophy is very radical in America. Even though it is very mainstream in Scandinavia which is full of social democracies.

These partisan right-wing attacks that Martin King was a Communist because he believed in equality, are flat bogus to put it mildly. But he was certainly a Leftist radical a Socialist even who believed in using government to redistribute the wealth of the country. To take from the very wealthy in higher taxes to take care of the poor. He was even to the Left of Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson when it came to economic policy. Who happen to be our two most progressive president’s.

The 1960s at least the early and mid 1960s was about equal rights under law the civil rights movement. But by the late 1960s after the passage of those very important laws, it became about the income gap and the lack of educational and economic opportunities not just for African-Americans, but other Americans as well living in poverty regardless of race. Which was what the Poor People’s Campaign was about that would’ve been the second act of Dr. King’s movement.

National Review:Betsy Woodruff: Prison Reform Proven to be Very Transideological

.
Source:The New Democrat

You want to save money on government and keep taxes down whether it is Texas or any other state, then stop sending people to jail or prison for simply using or possessing illegal narcotics. And instead send narcotics addicts to drug rehab at their expense where they can get off of these narcotics. Without a criminal record making it very difficult for them to get a good job. And allow for them to be able to move on with their lives and live productively. If you don’t include corrections to go along with defense and tax loopholes as it relates to government’s budgets, but you are talking about fiscal responsibility and deficit reduction, you are just talking about those things. And perhaps using them for political gain, but aren’t actually serious in addressing those issues.

Associated Press: Kelly Daschle: U.S. Eases Sanctions As Iran Implements Nuke Deal

.

Source:The New Democrat

This is what happens when you negotiate with a country instead of trying to ignore them as if they do not exist. When you give countries including authoritarian states like Iran incentive to behave well and they are not crazy thinking you are simply trying to destroy them, which the current President of the Islāmic Republic seems to believe that, chances are they will behave. Because these states tend to have one thing and goal in mind. Which is to stay in power and doing things to improve their economy gives them the resources to do that. When you say give up your weapons or else and not really even knowing what else is, let alone prepared to do that, or you just keep in the same sanctions that you’ve had for thirty plus years knowing that Iran can get money from other places, they’ll just say what else. And tempt you to try them.

ESPN: SportsCentury Muhammad Ali: The Greatest of All-Time

Source:The New Democrat

First of all Muhammad Ali is the greatest not only boxing heavyweight of all-time, but the greatest sports performer of all-time. Because of his incredible personality, incredible confidence that was warranted and his great intelligence as well. Plus the fact he knew exactly who he was better than anyone, but also because he knew exactly what he wanted. And that is what his career was about and what all the trash talking was about. Using all of that to get what he wanted. Which was either to remain world champion or win another world championship.

As far as Muhammad Ali the fighter, you are talking about a mountain of perfection. As far as both great physical talents, but also that great intelligence as well. A 6’3 210-220 pound fighter depending on who and when he was fighting, with incredible hand and foot speed. The man look like a great tailback in football or a great big wide receiver. Tall, big and all muscle with a great mind and wit as well. And if he had any faults, it was that he went too far with it. Later in his career believing he was still that great fighter he no longer was. And losing fights to people who had no business fighting him. And taking too many beatings late in his career.

I’ve always viewed Muhammad as a power puncher who wasn’t a knockout artist. If that makes any sense, but what I mean by that is that he wouldn’t knock you down in a couple of punches. But would wear you out in hundreds of punches and simply just beat you up until he finished you off. Which is how he won a lot of his fights. Which is how be beat Ron Lyle and George Foreman and Joe Frazier the third time. One of the things that made him great was that he could deliver a lot of firepower. Without either getting hit back or not getting hurt by it. Which is why he was able to fight so long.

Merv Griffin Show: Video: Martin Luther King in 1967

.
The New Democrat

One of the things I respect most about Dr. Martin L. King is that even though he must have had a lot of at least inside anger because of all the racism and racial discrimination that he and the African-American community endured in this period, that because he had so much class, intelligence and was such a peaceful man, that he generally did not show it. And instead used his intelligence based on the facts to bring so many people of multiple races behind his cause. Instead of using his anger and dividing the country even further. Dr. King was a true leader and used whatever anger he must felt in a positive sense as a motivator to stay on course and move his movement in the right direction. And get the people behind him to accomplish his goals. And this was from people of multiple races and not just of African and European descent. But people of all races behind him.

The USFL History: Video: ABC Sports: USFL 1985-USFL Championship-Oakland Invaders vs. Baltimore Stars: Full Game

Baltimore the only city to win the Super Bowl, 1970, 2000 and 2012, the USFL Championship in 1985 and the CFL Grey Cup in 1995. And the Baltimore Colts won the NFL Championship in 1958 and 59 before that game was called the Super Bowl. So this is a big city with a great American pro football history. With a bunch of championships as well as playing in a lot of championship games. And some of the best American pro football fans in the world. The USFL didn’t fold because of lack of support, or lack of good players, or lack of coaching, or lack of quality play. They folded because of lack of management in the league administration and how their clubs were run. Had they stayed in the spring and summer and stayed out of NFL markets, they could very well still be in business today.

Mistere: Video: Frost-Nixon Interview, The First Show

.
This post was originally posted at The New Democrat on Blogger

What I like most about the Frost/Nixon interviews is that we got to see the inner side of Richard Nixon. He was very protective about his personal life and his feelings. But David Frost got him to open up a little bit and perhaps President Nixon wanted to open up as well. And you got to see in this first interview Dick Nixon giving a little about what his philosophy on life is. And what makes people happy and how he feels about these issues. There wasn’t many times in Dick Nixon’s public life at least where we got to see him as the man. And not as a politician or president and that is one reason why the Frost/Nixon interviews were a success. Because Frost brought out Nixon the man in these interviews as we got to see him purely as a human being.

ABC News: Video: This Week’s Powerhouse Roundtable

President Obama did what he needed to do politically with his speech. And without the national security leaks he doesn’t give this speech and we aren’t talking about it right now. Because his National Security Council are doing what they believe they need to do to secure the country. Whether Americans on the Left and Right agree with how they are going about that. The National Security Council will continue to do what they believe they need to do to secure the country. And not necessarily screw people’s civil liberties, but to be real about this, that is not their main interest and main objectives. The Neoconservatives have won the battle as far as liberty versus security when it comes to the National Security Council. And whether the President is a Democrat or a Republican security will continue to come first with them.

The McLaughlin Group: National Security Surveillance a& Hillary Clinton 2016

.
Source:The New Democrat

I covered this last night but President Obama essentially gave the speech that he had to give. And I believe the speech that he wanted to that he and his administration are aware of the concerns that. Americans have over their privacy at it relates to the surveillance reports that the NSA and other agencies. Cover but that he and his National Security Council are going forward in doing what they believe they need. To do to protect the country and will try to find a way that better protects our privacy.

Benghazi is only big news to Republicans and others who do not like Hillary Clinton. And she’ll find Democrats and I’m one of them who do not like her that much as a presidential candidate. Because she’s too safe, too centrist, not Liberal enough for me and a lot of other Democrats. And other reasons I’ll spare you for now but the only real threat she has to not being elected President of the United States. In about three years other than not running for president. Still a possibility comes from her center-left in the Democratic Party real Liberal Democrats who want to move in a clear direction.

One thing I agree with Bob Gates on is that Richard Nixon is our strangest president in at least. Modern times let’s say since TV has been with us since the late 1940s. But like a lot of other president’s he’s someone who looks better as history moves along because of his. Success’s in foreign policy and even making energy independence and putting Welfare reform and broader health care reform. On the national agenda even though he failed get to major legislation passed in those areas.

Here’s an example of bad Bipartisanship. What is going on in Congress right now with Iran. For the first time in thirty-five years America has a chance. To get a real diplomatic agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran over their nuclear weapons program. With a chance later on of reaching an agreement that may lead to both countries opening up a dialog. That could lead to the countries back to diplomatic relations with each other and officially talking to each other again. Having a formal relationship with each other that would include international trade. And Congressional Democrats and Republicans for political reasons and what they are trying to do with new sanctions. Would end that possibility.
