The Democratic Strategist: Robert Creamer: How to Fight Economic Inequality

Source:The New Democrat

Perhaps someone should explain to me how someone with a good education, who works hard and is very productive and makes a lot of money for the work they do and what they produce, how that is unfair for that person to be as financially successful as they are compared with someone who doesn’t have much of an education and perhaps didn’t finish high school, who struggles financially to make ends meet, because they lack the skills to get themselves a good job and be economically independent.

Because that is what so-called income inequality is supposed to be. People who are very successful in life who did what they needed to do especially early on in life to get themselves the skills that they need to be successful in life and people on the bottom who made mistakes early on in life, like having kids too early or not even finishing high school. But somehow it is unfair that the successful is so successful and people on the bottom in life for them is a struggle.

I’m all in favor of empowering people on the bottom. Whether they are still in school and come from low-income families or are low-income low-skilled adults. Empowering these people to be able to get themselves a good education either while they are still kids, or as adults. And empowering them to either finish their education, or further their education so they can get themselves a good job. And one reason for this is a better skilled, or well-skilled workforce benefits everyone because it means more people with economic security and purchasing power.

And it would be mean that we would need to spend less money on public assistance in this country. Because we would have fewer people either living in poverty or close to living in poverty. Like being short one paycheck of having to live in poverty. But to say lawyers or doctors or business executives making a lot more money than people who drive buses or clean rooms or work in service industries is unfair, is flat false. Because we are paid based on our skills and the work that we do in this country.

The reason why I do not use the term income inequality and prefer to use the term income and education gaps, because income inequality suggests that it is somehow unfair for a doctor to make ten to fifteen times more than someone who cleans building or works in retail as an associate. When the facts are there is a lot more people need to do and be able to do to be a doctor and be successful at it than you need to be a sales associate at a store. And this is the main reason why high-skilled jobs pay so much more than low-skilled jobs.

USFL Forever: USFL 1985-Week 8- Oakland Invaders @ Birmingham Stallions: Full Game

Week 8 - 1985_ Oakland Invaders vs Birmingham Stallions - Google Search

Source:USFL Forever– the Stallions and Invaders, from Birmingham in 1985.

Source:The New Democrat

“The Stallions are often cited as being one of the league’s most loved and best supported teams. In 1984 and 1985 they also were one of the best teams in the USFL. The city of Birmingham even bailed the team out of financial trouble with a $1 million loan during the 1985 season when owner Marvin Warner, a former U.S. ambassador, went through some legal problems.

On this night against the Invaders Joe Cribbs gained a season-high 94 yards and Birmingham’s defense had five sacks and two interceptions as the Stallions defeated Oakland 20-17.

The victory put Birmingham atop the United States Football League’s Eastern Conference at 6-2. Second place Tampa Bay, at 5-2. Oakland fell to 4-3-1 and to fourth place in the Western Conference.

Birmingham drove 79 and 63 yards on its first two possessions, capped by scoring runs of 9 yards by Cribbs and 8 yards by quarterback Cliff Stoudt, who injured an elbow on the run and later had to leave the game.

Danny Miller added field goals of 48 and 31 yards for Birmingham.

Oakland’s Bobby Hebert hit Anthony Carter on a 24-yard toss to the 2 and John Williams carried it across early in the second quarter to make it 14-7.

Novo Bojovic got a 27-yard field goal for the Invaders in the third period, and with 20 seconds left in the game, Hebert hit Carter on a 3-yard scoring pass.

Birmingham sacked Hebert for a total of 41 yards, and Clanton got his second interception in the final quarter. Hebert finished with 17 completions on 30 passes for 192 yards.”

From USFL Forever

Stallions quarterback Cliff Stoudt was Terry Bradshaw’s backup for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Just another example the fact that the USFL was major league football. Not a league of career cab drivers, food service workers, or construction workers living out their dreams as pro football players. But guys who not only went to college, but played major college football and at major college football programs. And then were either drafted in the NFL or USFL and played there and in many cases played in both leagues. When perhaps they weren’t given the opportunity to actually play in the NFL and not just sit on the bench. And the Oakland Invaders and Birmingham Stallions were two of the best franchises in the USFL.

Baltimore is the only city that has won the NFL Championship including three Super Bowls, the CFL Championship the Grey Cup and the USFL Championship in 1985. Baltimore is a crazy football city as far as how much they love pro football, that only lost the Colts because of the poor Colts management under Bob Irsay and that they weren’t given enough time to replace Baltimore Memorial Stadium and build a new stadium for the Colts. Or the City of Baltimore and the State of Maryland failed to make that happen. But not because they longer wanted NFL football and no longer wanted the Colts. And you can give me the poor attendance figures of the Colts the last few seasons all you want. But the fact is that the Colts were one of the worst franchises in the NFL in the early 1980s under Irsay and company. And that is what Indianapolis got in 1984 and what Colts fans were not going to support and subsidize.

Newsmax: The Steve Salzberg Show- Ira Stoll: Author of JFK Conservative

“And former vice president and managing editor of the New York Sun Author of the new provocative book “JFK: Conservative.”

From Newsmax

I wrote a couple of blog post last week why Jack Kennedy would not only be a Democrat but a loyal Democrat, a good Democrat and even a Liberal Democrat and he’s a big reason why I’m a Liberal Democrat.

For people especially on the partisan Right who want to make any person in the Democratic Party, or anyone on the Left that they may claim to respect as less than democratic or liberal, they do not either understand the Democratic Party and the mainstream wing or have chosen to ignore those things to make their partisan political points.

To listen to these partisan right-wingers, you get the idea that all Democrats are on the Far-Left and we are all Socialists or Social Democrats. Or today’s Far-Left is the mainstream left-wing in America. And even though I agree that the Far-Left in America wouldn’t have much to like about Jack Kennedy, someone who believe there was a limit to how much you could tax, people including the wealthy and a limit to how much government can do for people and still have a strong economy and you needed a strong national defense whether you are dealing with the Soviet Union or Islāmic terrorists.

Today Jack Kennedy would’ve been like Bill Clinton or John Kerry and even Barack Obama. Someone with a lot of respect and love at least inside the Democratic Party. And in Jack Kennedy’s case outside of the Democratic Party as well because Independents and perhaps even Northeastern Republicans, people who I call the real Conservative Republicans and real Republicans, because of his beliefs in both economic and personal freedom.

JFK had a healthy skepticism for what government could do for people. And his beliefs in a strong national defense, but to protect us and our allies and not to govern the world. It would be both the Far-Left and Far-Right where he wouldn’t fit in, but he didn’t fit in well there fifty years ago either.

The Hamilton Project: Blog: Melissa Kearney & Lesley Turner: Helping Lower-Income Middle Class Families

Role of Government
The Hamilton Project: Blog: Melissa Kearney & Lesley Turner: Helping Lower-Income Middle Class Families

This post was originally posted at The New Democrat on Blogger

Fifty to sixty thousand or even forty-thousand dollars a year might sound like a decent income in America. But when you count the fact the average American family brings in around fifty-thousand dollar a year, even with the Great Recession of 2008-09 and the fact that those salaries in large wealthy metropolitan areas like Washington, New York, Boston, San Francisco to use as examples, where that money is not that much in those areas because the cost of living is so high. Because with all the benefits of living in a big city or outside of a big city in a big metro area.

And that most Americans live in metropolitan areas and many us live in large metro areas like the ones I mentioned. And then you might have to add education if you have kids and you live in an area without the right public schools for your kids, or you have high health care costs. Fifty-thousand dollars a year give or take which technically puts you in the American middle class might sound like decent money, but not if you have a high cost of living. And not because you are bad with money, but simply you have high costs that you have to meet for your own good and family.

So those are the problems a large if not the largest middle class in the world here in America, but a middle class that in a lot of ways is struggling just to make ends meet. And struggling to afford housing, education, health care, putting money away for retirement. Things that they have to do, but since they aren’t technically poor, they aren’t eligible for public assistance. That is what happens when your cost of living increases over lets say a ten-year period, but your wages drop.

As a country with lack of economic growth, long-term high unemployment, all the jobs that were lost that haven’t been gotten back from the Great Recession and we are left with a percentage of the population the largest in our country our middle class that still have the same bills to meet and same obligations. But has fewer resources and again since they make too much money for public assistance, they have to meet these obligations out of their own pockets with fewer resources to pay those bills.

In the future I’ll be writing posts about how I believe we can and should address these economic problems. Through things like a new middle-income tax credit, job training and education for our lower- middle class workers. But with this post I just wanted to first address the problems and then go from there. Like any good doctor would, not that I’m a doctor, but to fix problems, you first have to know what the problems are.

CBS Sports: NBA 1983- Western Conference Semifinals Game 3- Los Angeles Lakers @ Portland Blazers: Full Game

“1983 NBA Playoffs Los Angeles Lakers vs Portland Trail Blazers Game 3”

From NBA Classic Games

The Blazers were a very consistent playoff team in the 1980s. I believe making the Western Conference Playoffs every season in the 1980s. They just didn’t have much if any history of advancing in the playoffs in that decade consistently having to play the Lakers or Mavericks or Rockets, teams that were pretty good in that decade.

The Lakers not only the Western Conference team of the 1980s but the NBA team of that decade. The 1980s I believe should’ve been a decade where the Blazers took a step up and became a consistent Western Conference and NBA Finals contender. If you look at who their head coach was in Jack Ramsey and then you look at their teams with Calvin Natt, later Kiki Vandeweigh, Clyde Drexler the best Blazer of all-time. Mychal Thompson and Steve Johnson were solid big men for them. And then of course Terry Porter as well as their point guard.

CBS Sports: NFL 1985-NFC-WC-San Francisco 49ers @ New York Giants: Pat Summerall Intro

.
Source:The New Democrat

The NFL on CBS was a great show for many reasons and Pat Summerall might have been the number one reason. But their timing and intros were classic and so well done and knew exactly how to put things and show things to people. First New York Giants home playoff game since the 1962 NFL Championship that was at Yankee Stadium, the day this wildcard game was played. Giants Stadium opened up in East Rutherford, New Jersey in I believe 1976 and this was the first Giants home playoff game there. And how does CBS Sports introduce this game, with Bruce Springsteen singing Glory Days. The Glory Days of the New York Giants from the 1950s and early 60s. With Pat Summerall a former New York Giant of course doing the intro. A simple two-minute video or so and this is one of best NFL videos and intros of all-time. Just for those reasons.

Gear Master: Video: CBS Sports: NBA 1990-NBA Finals-Game 5-Detroit Pistons @ Portland Blazers: Highlights

.
This post was originally posted at The New Democrat on Blogger

The Blazers probably peaked a season too early in 1990 and not prepared to play in the 1990 NBA Finals mentally as far as knowing what it took to win the NBA Finals. And they were playing a very veteran team in the Pistons who had just played in four straight conference finals and playing in their third straight NBA Finals and going for their second straight NBA Finals Championship. With the Blazers not even being to the conference finals with this group before reaching the 1990 NBA Finals. So this was a matchup of a very good experienced team in the Pistons, with a great player in Isiah Thomas and a great head coach in Chuck Daly. Vs. a young and very talented Blazers teams, without a lot of big game experience. And that showed up a lot in at least four out of the five NBA Finals games.

CBC Sports: CFL 1976-Grey Cup-Regina Roughriders vs. Ottawa Red Blacks: Full Game

.

Source:The New Democrat

Battle of the Roughriders! You would have to be familiar with the CFL to get that joke, but one reason why the CFL doesn’t get as much respect in America as perhaps it should it because they did at least at one point have multiple clubs with the same nickname. But this was a very good Grey Cup game, 23-20 the Red Blacks as the Ottawa CFL club is called now beat the Roughriders. Ottawa was able to move the ball well and score points against perhaps the best defense in the CFL in 1976 the Roughriders that only gave up about fifteen points a game. And had the best pass defense in the CFL. They also scored 428 points so they had a very good balanced team. The Red Blacks were able to move the ball with their balanced offense and shut out the Roughriders in the fourth quarter.

NBC Sports: MLB 1984-GOW-Detroit Tigers @ Chicago White Sox: Jack Morris No Hitter

Source: FRS FreeStates Plus– Detroit Tigers vs, Chicago White, in 1984

Source: The New Democrat

Here’s one example of why Jack Morris should be in the MLB Hall of Fame. Because when he was on, he could be very dominant, because he threw hard and then throw in his devastating forkball and he could fool you. One of the last pitchers especially of his era that you wanted to fall behind, because of his forkball and he wouldn’t need to throw strikes to get you out. The 1984 Detroit Tigers are about as a complete and great baseball team that MLB has had. At least since 1969 when divisional play started. They were very good defensively, had a very good, deep and all around lineup offensively. And had very good pitching, both starting and in the bullpen. And Jack Morris was a big part of that and should get more credit for it.
