The New Republic: Cass R. Sunstein: ‘Why Paternalism is Our Friend’

“The nanny state is in the news. A lot of people have been outraged by Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s effort to restrict soda sizes, recently overturned by a state court, and some people do not much like his proposal to ban cigarette displays in New York stores. If you share the outrage, you should recognize that various forms of paternalism are all around you, and at least some of them aren’t so bad.

Last year, new government regulations required automobile companies to increase the fuel economy of their cars, to a point where the fleet-wide average must exceed 50 miles per gallon by 2025. True, those regulations will reduce air pollution and promote energy independence, but the majority of the benefits come in the form of gas savings for consumers. For those who abhor paternalism, here’s the problem: Consumers can already buy high MPG cars, and many of them just aren’t doing so, even though they might well save money over the life of the vehicle. If the government is making the fleet a lot more fuel-efficient than consumers demand, is it operating as the national nanny, or the Gasoline Police? Should people be outraged about that?

Paternalism comes in a lot of shapes and sizes, and to come to terms with it, we need to offer a working definition. What seems to unify paternalistic approaches, however diverse, is that government does not believe that people’s choices will promote their welfare, and it is taking steps to influence or alter people’s choices for their own good.”

You can read the rest of Cass Sunstein’s piece at The New Republic

“New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, a two-time Nanny of the Month and 2009’s Nanny of the Year, is back to save us from ourselves yet again!

In order to promote breastfeeding, Bloomberg has ordered all public city hospitals to lock up free samples of baby formula. New mothers who are unable to breastfeed – or simply choose not to – can still get formula, but only after enduring a lecture from a hospital employee on the benefits of the boob over the bottle.

Reason TV’s Kennedy spoke with Susan Burger, a certified lactation consultant, who supports the mayor’s initiative on the grounds that “the real intent of that law is to protect breastfeeding mothers [and] their freedom of choice to breastfeed.”

Source:Reason Magazine– New York City Nanny, I mean Mayor (call it a slip of the tongue) Michael Bloomberg.

From Reason Magazine

Before I get into what I really want to talk about, I’m going to start this post off with a question: What the hell happened to the New Republic? Because before they got new management and Chris Hughes became its new editor, this was a real liberal democratic magazine. The official liberal democratic magazine in America that had a healthy skepticism about governmental power. That all seems to be gone now and now they are sounding like defenders of the state, especially the nanny state.

The current version of The New Republic seems to believe that freedom is dangerous and that it shouldn’t be our goal or the job of government to protect our freedom, but literally to protect the people, as if we are morons or little children and can’t do that for ourselves. And even if that means protecting people from themselves and even locking them up for their own good when they make choices that aren’t in their best interest.

Reading the New Republic now, except for Jeff Rosen who is a real Liberal, is like reading the The Nation magazine or the AlterNet, or listening to the political commentary on MSNBC: it’s “big government knows best and has all the answers and individual freedom and choice are dangerous”.

They are paternalists on the far-left, people who I really don’t even call Progressives any more but paternalists or prohibitionists. Prohibition is a statist idea by the way, but I generally what I call people who think like this whether they are on the Far-Left or Far-Right, are nanny statists or nanny staters. People who believe that it’s the job of government to protect people even from themselves.

And when you combine paternalism when it comes to personal or social issues with socialism as it relates to economic policy and you believe in things like nationalizing the healthcare and health insurance systems, as well as the retirement system and perhaps even the banking system, maybe even the energy industry and you combine that nanny statism on social issues, you really have what looks like communism. You got a King Kong size big government there to protect people from themselves: “Because big government is our friend and freedom and freedom of choice is our enemy”. That it’s not big government that’s the problem, but that big government is our friend and should direct how we live our own lives.

Paternalism whether it comes from the Far-Left as it relates to the War on Drugs, alcohol prohibition, tobacco, junk food, soft drinks, or whether it comes from the Far-Right as it relates to violent video games or pornography, or trying to outlaw pre-marital sex, or adultery or divorce, it doesn’t work. Because if people want to do things bad enough, they’ll find a way to do it and damn the consequences.

One of the reasons why we have taxes and regulations in America is to encourage good behavior and discourage bad behavior. Not to manage people’s lives for them. That if you want people to make healthy choices, you subsidize that and penalize them when they make unhealthy choices.

To respond to the argument that Cass Sunstein is trying to make which really sounds like he’s trying to pick up the pieces for the nanny state proponents: the regulations he’s talking about are regulations regarding businesses, not individuals. Businesses are also not allowed to hire people to whack out the competition for them. That’s also for the welfare for the general public, but that doesn’t help his case.

National Post: Jesse Kline: ‘Liberal Party Talks Tough But Still Struggles to Define Itself’

“TORONTO — Liberal leadership hopefuls had their final opportunity to make their pitch to party members and supporters in Toronto on Saturday. The candidates focused on personality, rather than policy, and spent little time attacking each other, choosing instead to focus on how much they hate Stephen Harper.”

From The National Post

From Fact Point Video

It seems to me at least as a Liberal American that if a political party is going to call itself the Liberal Party, then it should be a Liberal Party and not try to occupy the center and focus on purely centrist positions. That if you want to be a Centrist Party, then that’s what you should call yourself or the Independence Party. Perhaps Mushy Middle Party, or the Radically Moderate Party. But if you are going to call yourself the Liberal Party, then that’s exactly what you should be. Otherwise you are falsely representing and advertising yourself.

We all know where the Conservative Party in Canada is, they are a Conservative Party that’s exactly what they are representing, the center-right in Canada. And we know where the New Democratic Party is, the lets call it the far-left party in Canada. Even by Canadian standards they are on the far-left and are a social democratic party that probably represents Quebec or Scandinavia better than Canada as a whole. Canada is not as socialist as people tend to think and actually has a smaller Federal Government as percentage of gross national product than America.

I’m not an expert on Canadian politics obviously being a life-long American whose never lived in Canada. But I do follow Canadian politics and a lot of their elections going back to the late 1990s. Thanks to C-SPAN and the internet and what I get about the Liberal Party in Canada is that the reason why they are out of power is because Canadians and perhaps even Liberals themselves up there do not seem to know what the Liberal Party stands for anymore.

What does it mean to be a Liberal? That if you are trying to just occupy the center and not look like Social Democrats, you are not only giving away the center-left in Canada, because you are not even trying to occupy what you claim to be which are Liberals, but you are also giving away the center because people don’t know what you are. You say you are Liberals, but you are trying to tell Canadians you are Centrists instead, so what are you.

All I’m saying is that if you are going to be the Liberal Party, then that’s exactly what you should be and that’s what your platform should look like. “We are the Liberal Party in Canada that represents the center-left. We are not Social Democrats on the far-left and not trying to be the New Democratic Party. But we are Liberal Democrats that believe in freedom and that it’s the number job of government to protect freedom for those who have it and still deserve it. And expand freedom for people who do not have it, but deserve and need it”.

It’s not the job of government to take care of people with a superstate. But to protect their freedom and expand freedom with opportunity for people who need and deserve it. Thats what a Liberal platform would look like, that’s what the vision would be. And if Justin Trudeau are actually Liberals, then that is what they would be pushing. And perhaps even get support from the growing libertarian movement in Canada who are not Social Democrats or Conservatives either.

James Miller Center: Video: President Jimmy Carter: Statement on Iran Rescue Mission

James Miller Center: Video: President Jimmy Carter: Statement on Iran Rescue Mission

The failed rescue attempt in 1980 during the Iranian Hostage Crisis, was a disaster for several reasons. One, it showed that the greatest superpower in the world was still be held hostage by a group of Islamic terrorist thugs from the third world. And that America was unprepared and not up for the job in dealing with and ending this crisis. They weren’t sure who they were dealing as far as the people, but also what type of weather they were dealing with and how far they would have to go to make the rescue attempt. Being short on fuel, which is why the helicopter crashed. As well as just being another reminder about the energy shortage back home in America with people not able to afford, or having enough fuel of their own for their own automobiles.

And a hostage crisis in one of the top 3-5 oil and natural gas producers in the world and a country like Iran. Where America use to get some of their oil and gas from, was not helping the situation. But that’s just the policy disasters of the situation. And then you get to the politics of it. This meant that the chances of the Carter Administration being able to rescue the American hostages before the 1980 general elections, were probably not going to happen. And that this along with a weak economy, with high unemployment, high interest rates and inflation, cost of living basically across the board.

And on top of that an energy shortage, were going to be issues that Ronald Reagan, Congressional Republicans and the Republican National Committee were going to be able to use. Against President Carter and Congressional Democrats for the entire 1980 general elections. And these would be issues that Democrats were simply going to have to deal with and not be able to run from. And would see everyday. So this failed rescue attempt during the Iranian Hostage Crisis, was a disaster on several fronts. It just made the United States look very weak compared with a group of third world Islamic terrorists. And just another reminder of how bad things were at home in America.

Chatham 43: Richard Dingley- Interview of Kim Novak, in 1956

Kim Novak Interview 1956

Source:Chatham 43– Hollywood Goddess Kim Novak, in 1956

Source:The Daily Press

“Hollywood actress Kim Novak interviewed in 1956.”

Watch the interview here Chatham 43

The mid and late-1950s was probably Kim Novak’s career at it’s peak. She essentially left Hollywood by 1970, for a brief return in the mid 1980s. Not that she had to because could’ve easily remained a star through her sixties and she was only twenty-three in 1956. She could probably still be acting today, because she’s still very healthy and still looks great.

But in 1955 and 56, she gets The Man With The Golden Arm, Picnic and then two-years later in 1958 Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, she was on a role as a Hollywood goddess who not only looked the part, but got great substantial roles and performed beautifully in them. Not an actress who was simply a star because of her sex appeal and physical beauty, which she certainly had a lot of both anyway. But she was also a hell of an actress who I wish chose to have a long career.

New York City Public Radio: Interview of Malcolm x (March 10, 1960)

.

Source:Real Life Journal

This interview was very important because Malcolm X was being interviewed about one of the key aspects that he preached about during his movement. Which was African-American identity and what it means to be an American of African descent. The term African-American became popular or mainstream in America in the early 1990s. Before that Americans of African descent were called Black or Negro by non-racists as well as African-Americans themselves.

But the term African-American or Afro-American was actually introduced in America by Malcolm X and his movement in the early 1960s. Which is the term I use to talk about or describe Americans of African descent. Because Black along with White or Brown or Olive are colors and not races. A race is a group of people who originally come from a certain part of the world. Made up of similar ethnicities that of course aren’t the same, but share similar characteristics. Like Asian or African, European, Middle Eastern to use as examples. But colors are a way to describe one’s complexion and not race. At least that’s how I look at it.

Tania Ayde: Bugsy Siegel and The Flamingo Hotel

Attachment-1-1038

Source: Tania Ayde

Source:The Daily Post

Benjamin Bugsy Siegel was an interesting mobster. Italian, Irish or in Bugsy’s case Jewish because he could’ve been anything he wanted to be. Because of his intelligence and charm, but because he lacked basic discipline and patience he went very far, but in a short time, but was only around for a short time. Being killed by the mob leadership in his early forties after being killed in his Los Angeles home. By perhaps both the Italian and Jewish mafia’s and their leaderships.

After the mob leadership decided that Bugsy was no longer worth the investment with all the money Bugsy spent to build the Las Vegas casinos and that even though Bugsy was very effective as a hitman for the Italian and Jewish mafias, as well as an enforcer, he was no longer worth the investment. Because of how bad a businessman he was. And that he needed to be taken out before he cost his bosses more money.

The mafia were worried that Bugsy would end up in prison or talking to police, or whatever that he was too big of a gamble for them and needed to be dealt with. But without Bugsy Benjamin Siegel and Jimmy Hoffa, Las Vegas is not what it is today. A big vibrant city that it is in the Southwest and the entertainment capital of America. That is just a half-hour flight from Los Angeles. Where Americans all over the country go to everyday to have a good time.

A Current Affair: The Current Affair- Linda Kasabian: 1988 Special Interview

Vincent Bugliosi - A Current Affair

Source:A Current Affair– Manon Family chief prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi, being interviewed in 1988

Source:The Daily Press

“20th Anneversary Special on the Manson murders. Linda Kasabian is interviewed for the first time in 20 years. This is the only television interview that Linda Kasabian ever did after the trials. FOX Televsion. 1988.”

From A Current Affair

It’s hard to feel sorry for anyone no matter how long they are in prison who receive the same pleasures that people in free world get at taxpayers expense that some of the Manson Crime Family members have gotten while in prison.

Like having sex and fathering babies which is what Charles Tex Watson has been able to do. There’s nothing about The Manson Family that any decent sane person should feel sorry about. They made their beds in life and now are sleeping in them. Actually, they are sleeping in much better beds than they made for themselves. Serial murderers don’t tend to get the privileges that some of the Manson Family members have received.

For the crimes that the Manson Family committed, Charlie and everyone else most murderers who were diagnosed as sane and knowing what they were doing when committing their murders would’ve gotten the death penalty. Actually, they did get the death penalty before their sentences were commuted to life in prison.

And generally when serial murderers are sentenced to life in prison, it is life without the possibility of parole. They all are getting opportunities at parole, but probably none of them will ever get parole for their crimes. Because they are still lucky to be just alive, unlike any of their victims.

ABC News: Special Report: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination

ABC News Special Report

ABC News Special Report

Source:The Daily Journal

The assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King the leader of the American civil rights movement, was tragic for so many reasons. But the biggest reason why it was so tragic because of the time he died and what left he had to contribute not just to the African-American community, but the American community in general. Because at 39 and with everything he had to accomplish he still had a lot more to accomplish. Which would’ve started with the upcoming poor peoples march and the poor people’s movement.

The Poor People’s Campaign, had an opportunity to be a real campaign against poverty that would seek to actually end poverty. And not just create new programs to help people live in poverty, but actually empower people to get themselves out of poverty. Through things like education and job training and really going past the New Deal and Great Society. Not saying that this movement would’ve developed like this had Dr. King survived. But had he and Senator Robert F. Kennedy survived, this movement would’ve had an opportunity to develop.

Unfortunately as it turned out, Dr. King, didn’t die from some illness he had picked up. Or from some crazy person out their mind who probably should’ve been in a mental hospital. But he was killed by an escaped convict, a lost soul who had absolutely nothing going right in his life. Who was a career criminal and a loner who was simply looking to be noticed. To paraphrase Dan Rather from CBS News. Dr. King, wasn’t even murdered by a professional assassin, or a mobster hit man. James Earl Ray, was at best professional thief. Who wasn’t even very good at that and had been in and out of prison most of his life.

Malcolm X vs Bayard Rustin

.
Source:Real Life Journal

I’m going from first impressions here after seeing this debate for the first time tonight. But this debate sounds like to me anyway as a debate representing the main two wings of the American civil rights movement of the 1960s. The lets call it the ‘Black Power’ movement, represented by Malcolm X who I believe is the founding member of the movement who had all the intellect and knowledge to lead a movement like this. Because he knew African-American history very well and what was the state of this community back in the 1960s.

And I believed Malcolm X knew exactly what the community needed and what direction it should be moving in, which was freedom. He wasn’t calling for an expanded welfare state to take care of the African-American community. But he was calling for the same basic freedom that Caucasian-Americans had which was the ability to live their own lives and not be discriminated against based on race. And have the same access to education, healthcare, economic development that Caucasians already had.

Thats one side of the civil rights movement in America that of course was represented by Minister X. The other side led by Dr. Martin L. King of course was more inclusive and realistic. And Dr. King again another brilliant man with superior intellect who knew African-American history very well. And what millions of Africans in America were living through and were fighting for similar things. But against this is where the realism of Dr. King was so brilliant because it was very simple.

A numbers game that was going to have to be overcome for African-Americans to have the same freedom under law. As Caucasians and the numbers game was very simple, its called 4-1. His community was outnumbered 4-1 by Caucasians and other communities as a total and knew that for his movement to accomplish what they wanted, they were simply going to have to have more support and bring in other Americans outside of the community to work with them. Which is why he brought in Anglos, Jews, Latinos and other Americans and this faction was represented by Bayard Rustin at this debate.

As I blogged last night and the reason why I’m writing this blog tonight is that one of the comments on last night’s blog. Was a suggestion to check this video out as well. But as I blogged last night, MLK’s movement of civil rights and freedom through non-violence was the path to get to the civil rights laws of the 1960s. But Malcolm X represented the post-civil rights movement of now. “Since we have this freedom under law this is what we should do with it”. Which was about empowerment, education and economic development, and not about the welfare state.

NFL Films: NFL 1980-AFC Divisional-Oakland Raiders @ Cleveland Browns: Last Drive

Source:The Daily Post

The Cleveland Browns of the late 1970s early 1980s were called the Cardiac Kids for a good reason. They trailed late in games a lot and many times by two scores and would have to either score once very quickly to win, or have to score twice with like five minutes left in the game. Their defense was not horrible and perhaps not even bad, but certainly not dominant which is what it became under Marty Shottenheimer in the mid and late 1980s. And as a result would get into shootouts and when they play good teams with good defenses, would fall behind late and have to make great comebacks to win. The 1980 Raiders were a very good if not great all around football team. That could score a lot of points and simply shut teams downs. As they did in the AFC Playoffs and in the Super Bowl that season. The Browns were simply beaten by a better all around football team.
