The Bulwark: Inauguration Reaction: Donald Trump’s Very Bad & Un-American Inauguration Speech

“Join Tim, Sam and Sonny as they breakdown Trump’s very weird and bad inauguration address — and what comes next.”

As my colleague Erik Schneider wrote on The New Democrat today:

“I’ll get to what Chris Cilliza said later. But my first reaction to President Trump’s speech is that it was a nomination convention speech designed to get his party and Independents behind him and to blame everything that is wrong with America on the Democrats. President Trump’s inaugural address reminds me of Richard Nixon’s 1968 Republican National Convention speech. And here is some of what Mr. Nixon told that Miami audience back then…

As my colleague Ederik Schneider wrote about the “mainstream media” freaking out every time Donald Trump says or does something that they would call “Un-American”:

“You could also argue that Donald Trump is a smart enough man (or smart enough politician, at least) to know that Americans are used to being lied to by their politicians. Especially their politicians, even their President’s and that a lot of them never pay a price for it.

So what Mr. Trump does is knowing that he has a political base that sees him as God and therefor would never fault him for anything, regardless of the facts and evidence him and the stronger the facts and evidence against him, the more loyal MAGA to him… he simply takes advantage of that and lies his head off whenever he thinks it would benefit him. Knowing that the Democrats and the mainstream media will freak out about it. Which keeps him in the news and drives up his fundraising numbers.

So my advice for Democrats and the mainstream media, is not look like a school of fish on an underwater suicide mission. When Donald Trump says something crazy like we should invade a NATO ally, whether it’s Greenland or anyone else, don’t take the bait and ignore him. It’s when he does something crazy, irresponsible, illegal, and constitutional things, that’s when the Democrats and the mainstream media need to be prepared to act.”

But where I agree with The Bulwark is here is as Sam Stein said very early in this video: this was a very bad and unmemorable speech. And I think the TV ratings of it will reflect that later this week.

There was nothing memorable about this speech. The man didn’t even swear an oath on The Bible. So I guess he can’t be accused of swearing an oath to The Bible when he does something unconstitutional, or even breaks the law again, because he could literally say he never swore an oath to either The Bible or the Constitution.

If you want something that’s memorable about this event, (which is really what it was) the first President of the United States who neither believes in The Bible or the Constitution. So he made history again, but for the wrong reasons.
